Yuneilyn Córdoba y José Santos Rivera, dos pequeños productores en Quilalí, al norte de Nicaragua, han sufrido los efectos extremos del clima errático.
En noviembre de 2020, el huracán Iota desbordó un río cercano que destruyó sus parcelas de maíz y frijoles.
“La gente del área de Paul Atrel es pobre, por lo que durante muchos años han talado árboles para hacer carbón”, dice el líder comunitario Emile Elinos.
“El mundo ya se enfrenta a tres crisis de proporciones devastadoras que convirtieron a miles de niños, agricultores y comerciantes en refugiados”, dijo la Directora Ejecutiva del PMA, Ertharin Cousin, un día después de haber visitado el campamento de refugiados Zaatari en Jordania.
"El frente de batalla contra el coronavirus se está moviendo del mundo rico al mundo pobre", dijo David Beasley, Director Ejecutivo del WFP.
“Hasta el día que tengamos una vacuna médica, los alimentos son la mejor vacuna contra el caos.
Recursos más exiguos, diferentes prioridades de los donantes y cambios en los mecanismos de financiación de algunos países se han confabulado para crear un déficit de financiación y comprometer los programas. A no ser que lleguen fondos el próximo mes, más de medio millón de niños en Camerún, Mali, Mauritania y Níger podrían empezar el año escolar sin las comidas de las que dependen.
Las principales preocupaciones de las personas que aceptaron completar la encuesta realizada en línea fueron: incapacidad para cubrir sus necesidades alimentarias, pérdida parcial o total de ingresos debido a la crisis generada por la pandemia, y miedo a la propagación del virus.
