Cada día casi 85 millones de niños y niñas en América Latina y el Caribe reciben desayuno, merienda o almuerzo en sus escuelas, con una inversión estimada de 4.3 mil millones de dólares, de la cual la mayor parte proviene de los presupuestos gubernamentales. Una comida escolar diaria representa un gran incentivo para enviar a los niños a la escuela y para que estos prosigan su escolarización.
