27 de abril de 2007 –Con la participación del Presidente de Brasil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO) lanzó la Iniciativa América Latina y el Caribe sin Hambre, la cual busca erradicar este flagelo que afecta a 52,4 millones de personas en esta región.
Desde La Guajira hasta el Amazonas y del Chocó hasta el Vichada, más de 300 trabajadores humanitarios del Programa Mundial de Alimentos de las Naciones Unidas (WFP, por sus siglas en inglés) laboran incansablemente en estas zonas de difícil acceso para garantizar la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional de las comunidades más vulnerables de Colombia.

La preocupante tendencia muestra un deterioro constante de la seguridad alimentaria, con un número de personas con hambre que se ha triplicado desde 2016.
“Haití no puede esperar, no podemos esperar a que la magnitud del problema se exprese en muertes antes de que el mundo responda, pero hacia allá nos dirigimos", afirmó Jean-Martin Bauer, Director del WFP en Haití.

“Necesitamos que se nos permita llevar estos alimentos a Gaza para su distribución inmediata. Y no sólo una vez. Necesitamos un acceso sostenido. La situación allí es catastrófica y nuestras reservas se están agotando.
Los conflictos, las crisis económicas, los extremos climáticos y el alza del precio de los fertilizantes se combinan para crear una crisis alimentaria de proporciones nunca antes vistas. En 71 países, 309 millones de personas padecen hambre crónica.
En América Latina y el Caribe se anticipa habrá un alarmante aumento de 269% en el número de personas en inseguridad alimentaria severa comparado con 2019 - el mayor en términos relativos a nivel global.
Bruselas – Un informe presentado hoy conjuntamente por la Unión Europea, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) y el Programa Mundial de Alimentos de las Naciones Unidas (WFP), concluye que alrededor de 113 millones de personas en 53 países experimentaron inseguridad alimentaria aguda en 2018, en comparación con 124 millones en 2017.
