Los programas de alimentación escolar bien diseñados e implementados sobre la base de una nutrición de origen local tienen un impacto positivo en la nutrición infantil y en la salud, en la asistencia escolar y el aprendizaje, en la productividad e ingresos de los pequeños agricultores, y en la creación de empleo y el desarrollo del sector privado.
Ministros de todas partes de África confrimaron su asistencia. Muchos vinieron de Angola, la República Democrática de Congo, Ghana, Liberia y Sudán. Otros ministros vinieron de países del Medio Oriente que incluyen Iraq; Haití y Costa Rica de América Latica y el Caribe; y de Tayikistán en Asia.
Sheeran, quien asumirá su nuevo cargo en abril al concluir su actual mandato como Directora Ejecutiva, ha dirigido el Programa Mundial de Alimentos desde el 2007, ayudando a víctimas de conflictos y desastres naturales en más de 70 países.
Las comidas escolares en Santa Elena utilizan un modelo ‘de cercanía’ mediante el cual niñas y niños reciben comidas saludables producidos por pequeños agricultores locales, dinamizando así la economía.
Cuando hombres armados irrumpieron en su aldea sudanesa, Aicha Madar, de 50 años, huyó con su hija Fátima y se unió a otros miles que cruzaron la frontera hacia el este de Chad.
“Los grupos armados lo quemaron todo”, dice Aicha, sentada junto a un grupo de refugiados y arrullando a su hija de un año en su regazo.
“Aquí no tenemos nada ya que lo perdimos todo allá”, dice.
El Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP por sus siglas en inglés) comenzó a distribuir asistencia alimentaria a 1.400 familias salvadoreñas que huyeron de sus hogares para refugiarse en albergues temporales tras las tormentas que azotaron el país entre el 14 y el 16 de junio.
Las lluvias torrenciales han azotado Centroamérica, inundando gran parte de El Salvador.
