Tras el terremoto de magnitud 6,3 que sacudió la provincia de Herat, en el oeste de Afganistán, el sábado 7 de octubre, el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP) está sobre el terreno prestando ayuda a los supervivientes.
CIUDAD DE PANAMÁ – El número de personas en inseguridad alimentaria severa ha aumentado en más de medio millón entre diciembre de 2021 y marzo de 2022 en América Latina y el Caribe, mientras la región lucha para superar las consecuencias de la COVID-19 y suma ahora las consecuencias del conflicto en Ucrania, advierte el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP, por sus siglas en inglés) de las Naciones
El Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP) es la organización humanitaria líder que salva vidas y cambia vidas, brindando asistencia alimentaria en emergencias y trabajando con las comunidades para mejorar la nutrición y crear resiliencia.
La preocupante tendencia muestra un deterioro constante de la seguridad alimentaria, con un número de personas con hambre que se ha triplicado desde 2016.
“Haití no puede esperar, no podemos esperar a que la magnitud del problema se exprese en muertes antes de que el mundo responda, pero hacia allá nos dirigimos", afirmó Jean-Martin Bauer, Director del WFP en Haití.
En los barrio
Un grupo de niños y niñas nos miran fijamente, con curiosidad. Ya se han acostumbrado a la presencia del personal del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP) y sus vehículos blancos todo terreno que entran y salen del asentamiento en que viven a las afueras de Kabul.
Solo que esta misión no es para entregar alimentos ni para registrar a nadie.
El Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP) es gobernado por la Junta Ejecutiva del WFP, la cual forman 36 estados miembros y ofrece apoyo, dirección y supervisión intergubernamental a las actividades del WFP.
Esta donación, que equivale a cuatro millones de comidas de emergencia, financiará 820 toneladas métricas de paquetes de alimentos que podrían alimentar a más de 173.000 palestinos durante dos semanas.
La contribución de Tesfaye llega en un momento crítico de la respuesta de WFP, que se apresura a alimentar a más de un millón de gazatíes al borde de la inanición.
La primera visita que realizó el Embajador Bell, quien estuvo acompañado por la Representante del PMA en Nicaragua, Antonella D´Aprile, fue al Centro Educativo Aura Velia Guillén, al que asisten 160 estudiantes de preescolar y primaria que reciben la merienda escolar, un programa del Gobierno de Nicaragua que es administrado por el Ministerio de Educación y que recibe apoyo del programa PRO-
Esta contribución marca un hito histórico, ya que es una de las primeras veces que Mongolia dona fondos a WFP, reafirmando así su solidaridad internacional y su compromiso con el Hambre Cero.
