El nombramiento fue realizado por el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, António Guterres, y el Director General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación, QU Dongyu, luego de consultas con la Junta del WFP en una sesión especial en la sede del WFP en Roma.
Pollok manifestó: “McCain asume la jefatura del Programa Mundial de Alimentos en un momento en
WFP se está viendo obligado a recortar drásticamente las raciones en la mayoría de sus operaciones a medida que la financiación humanitaria internacional cae en picada.
“Estamos preparándonos activamente para la llegada del huracán Beryl en las próximas 24 horas. La preparación es clave y cada minuto cuenta en este momento.
Actualmente, alrededor de 345 millones de personas enfrentan altos niveles de inseguridad alimentaria, según el análisis del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (WFP por sus siglas en inglés), lo que representa un aumento de casi 200 millones desde principios de 2020. De estas personas, 43 millones se encuentran a solo un paso de la hambruna.
