A nivel mundial la desnutrición infantil sigue siendo una prioridad por su impacto a corto y mediano plazo. En El Salvador aún hay municipios donde 34% de niñas y niños presentan una desnutrición crónica lo que significa que esta población no esta consumiendo la cantidad y calidad de nutrientes que su cuerpo necesita.
En América Latina y el Caribe se anticipa habrá un alarmante aumento de 269% en el número de personas en inseguridad alimentaria severa comparado con 2019 - el mayor en términos relativos a nivel global.
“Es vital y urgente que prestemos asistencia alimentaria al creciente número de personas vulnerables en la región, así como a aquellos que dependen de un trabajo informal”, alertó Miguel Barreto, Director Regional para América Latina y el Caribe de WFP.
Durante la pandemia de la COVID-19, el sector minorista ha jugado un rol crucial para garantizar el acceso de la población a los alimentos de la canasta básica.
Las principales preocupaciones de las personas que aceptaron completar la encuesta realizada en línea fueron: incapacidad para cubrir sus necesidades alimentarias, pérdida parcial o total de ingresos debido a la crisis generada por la pandemia, y miedo a la propagación del virus.
